of detours and men

In irritating news for those of you in nordeast and probably other locals around town, the wonderful city of MPLS is seal coating streets right now. For those that haven't already groaned at the sight of those words, this now means that potentially some of your favorite streets for riding/commuting/whatever are now coated with a fun layer of gravel.

In my hood, Johnson is coated from 18th to probably 37th, St.Anthony parkway between Stinson and New Brighton Blvd was done the other day, and who knows what else I discover as I try to avoid the mess.

In other better news, the Cedar lake commuter trail doesn't detour over by the walker anymore. They have laid some fresh asphalt that kicks you out right on the corner by Lee's, so at least that stupid detour through the city vehicle refueling station is over.

Until next time and the problem with Democrats

All right...I am a little late on this as I wasn't sure if I was going to mention it but what the hell.

I planned a little date night for April 8th and it was a ton of fun.

WE went to Adelita's on Central for some Mexican which was a little mixed. I liked my dish but L was not so enamored with her seafood burrito, though she didn't mind bringing it for leftovers so it couldn't have been too bad. Apparently it is owned by the same people who own Chiapas across the street, but they are intending to make it a touch more upscale than that.

Afterwards we went to the Mexican bakery and grabbed a couple deserts for later (again L struck out by discovering she does not like flan).

Then finally we were off to the main event of the evening the season finale of the Electric Arc Radio Show. The show was really good as always and the New Standards were pretty good, though I thought their arrangement of London Calling could have been a little more original (a very minor complaint though).

This brings me to my complaint about Democrats. They had a special guest at the show and it was Al Franken. He came out at the end and talked a little and it was a very underwhelming experience. I would like to point out that up until now I have been very excited to see what he was going to bring to the race for senate in '08 as I respect a lot of his views on issues.

Unfortunately he did not live up to my expectations at all. He seemed uncomfortable with the whole politician shtick and most of what he had to say was about Democrats doing this and Democrats doing that and we need to get Democrats into this office and that one.

I'm sorry but just electing card-carrying Democrats isn't the solution to all the issues in our country. Democrats don't come pre-loaded with all the answers and frequently make dumb mistakes too.

I guess that what I want from my politicians are answers. I want to know what they think can be done to fix things and even what they think needs fixing. All in all Franken is going to have to do a lot more now to get me to give him my vote.

Busy weekend so far

It's been a busy weekend so far though Sunday looks to be a study day for me.

Friday L & I went to an art opening at Cliche, a clothing boutique she likes. The art wasn't my thing, but L found a great new top and another handbag to add to her collection. After that we went to the Walker to check out the film Urban Explorers. If you are not familiar with urban explorers, they are people who explore abandoned buildings, caves, sewer systems, etc. The film focused on a group from around the twin cities, but also traveled to Chicago, Florida, Scotland, and Paris. One of my favorite parts was in Florida with this warehouse in the everglades where NASA abandoned the remains of the largest rocket engine ever created. It was pretty incredible stuff and I would highly recommend checking out the movie if it comes your way.

Saturday we checked out the latest Electric Arc Radio show and like the one in January it was a tone of fun. I thought Brady was on fire this time and with Walker Kong as the musical guests its hard to go wrong (is it just me or does Ackerman kind of have a Elvis Costello thing going on?). Following that met up with pals Brian and Sarah for a tasty dinner at Tum Rup Thai. This was my first time eating here and I can say it is highly recommended.

Sunday so far has been about meeting up with Heidi for some brunch at the Modern and hopefully taking it easy the rest of the day.

radio without the radio

L & I went to see Electric Arc Radio this weekend and it was a ton of fun. Think radio show without the radio, or as they said "dirtier than Keillor"

For those that don't know Electric Arc is a combination of the Lit 6 Project and Creative Electric Studios. I could take the time to try and describe them but I think the strib article probably will do a better job than I could. Unfortunately the strib takes articles down after three weeks so none of the links I checked work. So try this instead.

I will be checking out a couple more shows coming up here on St. Patrick's Day and one in April, and I would recommend getting tickets now if you are at all interested as they will sell out.

Also going on Superbowl Sunday is Lit 6 Story Stage, open mic at the 331 in Northeast. I think I will be checking this out as well as friend and all around bearded gentlemen Brian should be showing up to tell us some fabulous tales. Should be a good time.
